If a family is planning on doing an
intervention on a person who has a history of psychiatric drug use you may want to take some precautions before starting. Contact their doctor or physician who has been prescribing the psychiatric drugs and figure out what and how long these drugs have been prescribed. Don't be misled by a doctor who tells you that the addict is taking only a small dose. Although the risk of harmful drug effects does usually increase with the size of of the dose, some addicts are very sensitive to psychiatric drugs and can suffer extreme side effects.
Unfortunately,
psychiatric drugs can affect the brain and mind and seriously impair a persons mental function well before they recognize that anything is the matter. While trying to do an intervention while a person is coming off of a psychiatric drug can make it hard for an interventionist to rationalize with the addict. That is why it is very important to find out what medications or prescribed drugs a person is on before doing an intervention.
